What is AI & ML:

Artificial intelligence (AI) means a smart computer system like humans to solve complex problems. Machine learning (ML) is allowing machines to learn from available data so that they can give a precise output.

AI is used almost everywhere in facial recognition, medical, online gaming, sports, automobile, insurance, airways, defence, government and private companies. Decision making on various attributes of our daily lives is being outsourced to artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms as they are motivated by speed and efficiency in the decision-making process.

However, slowly, public and government are beginning to realise the dangers and complexity of programmes developed using AI and ML and the need for proper checks and balances in the way such programmes are used and developed.

Why ethics in AI and ML:

* AI and ML are regularly consumed, and now it is more important than ever to ensure that decisions made using these do not reflect discriminatory behaviour towards a specific population or purpose. Therefore, it is important to take fairness into consideration while consuming the output from these programmes.

* The output of AI and ML is exceptionally consistent, never tires, and is undeniably precise. The problem is that these programmes don’t understand the context or the tone. They don’t understand emotion and empathy in the way that humans do.

* While AI and ML are used globally and a few of them impact society, there is no legal recourse or official authority to hold a company responsible for the deeds of its algorithms.

* Many corporations choose to patent applications involving AI and ML, but patenting requires disclosing them, so lots of other corporations decide to protect their programmes as trade secrets, which are basically just things you don’t tell anybody.

* Few other important factors are (1) Transparency and Privacy (2) Beneficial Use & Capacity for Good (3) Malicious use

AI dilemma and balancing it:

* It’s a standard feature for pilot to have auto pilot and this feature can do everything about flying an airplane, from take-off to landing, but pilots intentionally choose to manually control the aircraft at crucial times in order to maintain their piloting skills and manage digital dilemma.

* The ethical dilemma that an autonomously driven car would need to resolve instantly when a child jumps suddenly into the car’s path in a turn and there’s no time to brake or you might have situation at V junctions where you are travelling at high speed and about to take a turn and you find pedestrians on both sides of the roads. Tesla is a fully automated car and at the same time has manual intervention.

Few fails of AI: –

* Deepfake Bots on Telegram generate fake nudes of women – The bot will send stripped naked images to the user and this can only successfully perform this process on images of women.

* Apple’s Face ID Defeated by a 3D Mask – A teams of three hackers from Vietnam could unlock a Face ID-equipped iPhone by gluing 2D eyes to a 3D mask. The mask was made of stone powder which cost them $200.

* ICT’s Intelligent Camera Operator Tracks the football inaccurately – System constantly mistook the umpire’s bald head for the ball.

* All Social Media giants are unable to get away from hate content – In spite of their efficient Artificial Intelligence, system is unable to predicting hatred and illegal content.

Few recommendations on ethics in AI:

* Identify existing infrastructure and related data that AI ethics program can influence upon.

* create a data and risk framework that is specific to the Industry

* Understand AI successes in other industries and change the way you think about AI ethics

* Optimise guidance and tools for product and service managers.

* Build a comprehensive organisational awareness

* Encourage and provide Incentives so that employees play a good role in identifying AI ethical risks

* Ensure there is a team to monitor impacts and engage all stakeholders of the organization

Newer technologies are created for the sake of something good and AI offers us amazing new abilities to help people and make the world a better place and this can happen only when it is in accordance with ethics. It is recommended that all governments have a regulation as a means of ensuring transparency with human accountability.
