An Artificial Intelligence That Finds Your Soul Mate: How Much Would You Pay? – PCMag

Online daters know they can create profiles on a number of platforms, but according to a new survey conducted by Tidio, most people would ghost them all for the holy grail: a dating app or site that used artificial intelligence (AI) to find them a truly perfect match.

And they’re willing to pay for that privilege—39% would spend up to $40 per month; 25% said it’s worth $40 to $80 per month; but 30% wouldn’t pay for an algorithmically perfect partner.

Most people (47%) would join an AI-powered dating app to get a long-term partner, 33% just want friends, and 19% are looking for casual hookups. Those first two stats are lower for men and higher for women.

AI won’t convince many people to leave their current relationship—only 7% said they’d do that on the say-so of an algorithm. But 47% said they’d treat an AI’s breakup recommendation as a relationship red flag.

People would definitely like an AI to help them make a better profile to be “more attractive” in an app. Especially men. They also wouldn’t mind some AI help in chatting up someone on the dating app, though 12% said it would be too artificial to do that. Because, you know, people on dating apps are so genuine.

As we enter the age of the metaverse, the question comes up: What of a potential partner that’s primarily or even only there for you in virtual reality? It’s something a lot of people have thought about. While the majority of people still want someone to couple with IRL, a perfect AI partner isn’t out of the question by any means.

You can see in the top chart how many respondents would choose an AI partner, but this differs depending on their status. For example, single people (67%) want AI to find them a real-world mate; married people (43%) would settle for an AI partner. A hefty number would consider both.

Married people are using dating apps the most on a weekly basis (26%). People in open relationships use them more per week than singles (25% and 19%, respectively) across all age groups. The numbers fluctuated a bit when respondents were asked whether they use them occasionally or infrequently.

Much like the metaverse being thrust upon us, most people consider it inevitable that AI will be choosing partners for us in the future, with 60% calling it very likely. A majority (66%) would already consider an AI-powered app more trustworthy. Even if the app didn’t get them a good match, most (75%) would simply keep adding new data to optimize the algorithm. That should be music to the dating-app industry’s virtual ears.
